Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to install a dash camera in a car?
Installation costs start at around $40 and increase from there. If you want to hardwire a dash cam into the fuse box or bracket mount it, expect to pay more for installation.
Does hardwiring a dash cam void a Honda warranty?
Hardwiring will not void your warranty. But the installation should be done by professionals, because if your car has electrical problems due to improper hardwiring of a dash cam (or any accessory), a manufacturer may deny warranty claims for vehicle electronics.
Does a dash cam help with insurance?
Dashboard camera footage can help with insurance claims. If you have accident footage that proves you’re not responsible, it can help keep your premiums down. Some cameras can record while the car is in motion or parked. If you’re innocent, you can use footage to fight a traffic ticket.
Does adding dash cam lower insurance?
No, a dash cam does not lower auto insurance. But it can help with claims. See above.
How much does it take off insurance?
A dash cam doesn’t reduce your insurance premiums.
Are dash cams on when car is parked?
Devices with a feature called parking mode will record when your car is parked and turned off. Most dash cams go into hibernation mode when the engine is switched off. With parking mode, they begin recording if someone tries to break in or vandalize your car. They also record if a car is involved in a hit and run while parked.
Are dash cameras legal in Alberta?
Yes, this type of video recorder is legal in Alberta and across Canada, as long as you only record in a public space. You cannot record on someone’s property, or inside a garage to spy on mechanics.
Can a dash cam drain a car battery?
Yes, if a dash cam is plugged into your car’s 12-volt power outlet and the outlet is always on, it could drain your battery. With most vehicles, the power outlet comes on only when the ignition is in accessory (ACC) mode. So check if your vehicle’s power outlet stays on after you switch off and lock your car. When the BlackVue DR590X-2CH installed, we recommend adding the same brand’s Power Magic PRO Battery Discharge Prevention Module. This device turns off your dash cam if your vehicle’s battery level falls below a certain threshold.
